Celebrating 80 Years of Tony’s Jacal: A Family Tradition

This week, we’re raising a glass to Tony’s Jacal as it celebrates a remarkable 80th anniversary! This iconic restaurant isn’t just a staple in Del Mar... it’s a cherished part of my family’s history, deeply rooted in the memories of my beloved Grandma Isabel. I can still picture her making the trek from Chula Vista to Del Mar, eager to enjoy lunch and a refreshing drink at this special spot. Thanks to her, I have become a regular, carrying on the tradition she started and creating my own weekly ritual of dining here.

A Weekly Tradition

Every Monday evening, you can find me at Tony’s Jacal, eagerly anticipating my favorite meal. As I step inside the bar area, I’m greeted by the friendly staff, and before I even take a seat, my trusty waiter, Axel, has already placed a bowl of chips and salsa and a large iced tea at my table. It’s the little things that make this place feel like home.

My usual order is a delicious turkey taco, served with beans, rice, and the best cabbage salad you’ll ever taste. The staff knows me well...they recognize my last bite and have my two-scoop ice cream with chocolate sauce ready for the finishing touch. Now that is service! It’s this sense of family and community that makes Tony’s Jacal so special.

Racing Season

During the Del Mar racing season, my visits increase as the excitement in the air draws me back. If luck is on my side and I win big, it’s margarita time!!! But a word of caution: the Cadillac Margarita is STRONG, so I make sure to keep it to two. They truly know how to craft a delicious drink here, and hydration is key!

If you’re new to Tony’s Jacal, I highly recommend the Anniversary Combination. This delightful plate features four mini items: a taco, enchilada, chile relleno, and tamale, all served with rice and beans. It’s a perfect way to sample the best of their menu.

And for dessert, you absolutely cannot miss the Banana-Chocolate Dessert Chimichangas. These heavenly treats are made with banana, Mexican chocolate, and cinnamon, rolled in flour tortillas, fried to perfection, and topped with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and ice cream. It’s a sweet ending that will leave you dreaming!

A Rich History

Tony’s Jacal was founded in 1946, just after World War II, by Tony and Catalina Gonzales. Tony had just returned from military service, and with Catalina’s encouragement, they opened a small restaurant in his parents' home. Starting with only 26 seats and weekend service, their authentic dishes quickly gained popularity, drawing diners from far and wide.

As the demand grew, they expanded their establishment, eventually transitioning to a six-day week. Today, Tony's Jacal continues to be a beloved destination, with a menu that features traditional Mexican dishes alongside American favorites. Although Tony passed away in 1974 and Catalina in 2000, their legacy lives on through their children and grandchildren, who are dedicated to preserving the family’s culinary traditions.

Gratitude and Community

As I wrap up my meal, I take a moment to express my gratitude to the amazing staff: Theresa, Ray, Axel, Ashley, Daniel, and everyone at Tony’s Jacal. They truly make this place special! I always eat in the bar area, and as I finish, I say my goodbyes, feeling grateful for the warm atmosphere that makes this restaurant feel like home.

Exiting through the front door, I share a moment with Ray and Theresa, the mother-son duo who carry on the family legacy. On my way out, I take a moment to touch the portrait of Guadalupe, just as Grandma Isabel would do, thanking her for a wonderful dinner and safe travels. This week, I add a special thank you for allowing Tony’s Jacal to be a cherished part of our community for 80 beautiful years.
