As the sun begins its descent over the Del Mar racetrack, the vibrant excitement turns into a bittersweet farewell. It’s Bing finale day, a celebration that perfectly captures the essence of the fall horse racing season. Each year, as I say goodbye to this cherished tradition, it tugs at the heartstrings, reminding me of the joy and connections formed within these hallowed grounds.

One of the highlights of this special day is the joy of exchanging gifts with my racetrack pals, but primarily the fabulous gals who have become dear friends over the years. Each gift is a heartfelt token of appreciation for the camaraderie we’ve built throughout the season and the many years I have spent at this amazing place. The laughter and smiles shared among us reinforce how much these friendships make Del Mar “Cool as Ever.” Their enthusiasm and passion for the races create bonds that make every visit to the racetrack truly unforgettable.

As the final race approaches and the last cheers echo through the grandstand, I often find myself at Tony’s Jacal, indulging in their delicious turkey tacos paired with a refreshing Cadillac Margarita...something only Tony’s can do just right. Each bite and sip sparks memories of the season, and I can’t help but think about how Bing would have relished the excitement in the air, perhaps sharing his signature wit and wisdom about the joy of racing and the friendships forged in the process.

This season holds even more significance as Del Mar proudly hosted the Breeders' Cup for the past two years. Attending both events filled me with immense pride and gratitude, as I witnessed the best horses and jockeys compete on this iconic turf. Each race was a thrilling reminder of why this place is so special to all of us.

Adding to the magic of closing weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Bing Crosby's nephew, Howard Crosby. He shared treasured pictures and stories about Bing, bringing the legendary figure’s legacy to life in a way that felt intimate and personal. One of the most touching moments was when Howard sang “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” at the winner’s circle. The atmosphere was electric, and I felt Bing’s spirit resonating through the crowd. To top it off, Howard even serenaded me with my favorite Christmas song by Bing Crosby, “White Christmas,” making the experience all the more unforgettable.

As I take another sip of my margarita, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the experiences and connections that have made every visit to the racetrack special. The thrill of the races may fade until next year, but the memories and friendships will linger, reminding me that while the season ends, the spirit of Del Mar will always remain alive in our hearts...well at least in MINE.

Here’s to another incredible season at Del Mar!
