Every year, as spring approaches, I find myself eagerly anticipating my annual walk around the stunning flower fields in Carlsbad, California. This year marks the fourth anniversary of this personal tradition, and it has become more than just a physical challenge; it has transformed into a journey of reflection, companionship, and perseverance.
The story of my walks began back in 2022 when an observant employee named Tim noticed my daily routine of strolling through the vibrant fields. Each morning, I would walk about 2 to 3 miles before heading off to work or diving into my day. Tim, curious about my endurance, asked how far I thought I could walk. “Maybe 10 miles?” I replied, and with that, a challenge was born. Inspired, I decided to test my limits and set a goal: to walk 20 miles in one day. To my surprise, I ended up covering 25.29 miles! That moment was a profound reminder of how far I've come, especially after facing my own setbacks.
During that first year, I also challenged Tim and Ross to race up the Row 5 Hill. They accepted, and what started as a friendly competition has blossomed into a cherished tradition. Every year, on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, these two friends race each other, adding an element of fun and camaraderie.

Fast forward to 2023, where I was able to walk an impressive 28.50 miles, followed by 28.92 miles in 2024. This year, I completed 26.61 miles. Each walk continues to push my limits, and the goal is to start at 9 AM and keep moving until the fields close at 6 PM. This challenge isn't just about mileage; it’s a time for deep reflection. I find myself contemplating other personal goals and reminding myself to never give up, no matter the obstacles I face.
The scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. With 80 million blooms of ranunculus' surrounding me, the beauty of nature serves as a constant source of inspiration and peace. Tim drives around in a golf cart, ensuring I'm doing well and even treats me to a hot dog when I hit the 20 mile mark. Ross is always there, checking in and filling my water bottle during my laps. Their support has made this experience even more special, reminding me how important it is to have friends who uplift and encourage you.

As I walk amidst the vibrant flowers, I am reminded of a quote by Okakura Kakuzō: “In good times or in bad, a flower is always your friend.” This sentiment resonates deeply with me as I reflect on the friendships I’ve formed during these walks. With every step I take, I feel surrounded by the warmth and support of my friends, both old and new.
Walking through the flower fields is more than just a physical challenge; it's a celebration of resilience, friendship, and the beauty of nature. As I look forward to my next walk, I carry with me the lessons learned and the bonds formed, knowing that each mile brings me closer to my goals and my friends. Here’s to many more years of blooming friendships and personal growth in the magnificent Flower Fields of Carlsbad!
